His own relatives—particularly his mother, maternal grandfather, and uncles—were by far the strongest influences upon his early development, since in his very early youth Lovecraft found little congeniality in the companionship of his peers. Part of the reason for this circumstance was the precocity he displayed from his earliest years. He could speak by the age of one; could recite simple verse by two; was reading by four; had begun to write prose and verse by seven; and was learning Latin by eight or nine at the latest.
Lovecraft would spend hours a day “wrestling” with correspondence, writing ten-, twenty-, or thirty-page letters to individuals he had never met. In this way Lovecraft became a revered and beloved figure in the tiny worlds of amateur journalism and weird fiction. It is therefore not surprising that his sudden death in early 1937 was met with shock and sadness throughout these communities. Sudden as it was, however, his death was perhaps not wholly unexpected. His fatal illness—cancer of the intestine and renal failure—had manifested itself so early as 1934, but Lovecraft had passed off the increasingly severe attacks as “bad digestion” or “grippe” and never sought medical treatment.
